Well, today I do not feel like I am losing a sister. Instead, I feel like I am welcoming an ex-boyfriend permanently into the family. I am the bride’s sister, and I actually dated the groom’s brother. It worked out much better for them, but thankfully, me and my ex remain friends so Thanksgiving will not have to be an awkward affair.
I want to thank my sister for giving me the honor of standing as her Maid of Honor. I want to thank the groom for making her so happy. To all of you who have come to share this day, I thank you as well.
While I admit to having a bit of bias, I have to say that my sister is the most beautiful bride I have ever seen. I never thought I would see her in a wedding gown. She told me once that if she ever got married, it would be in a pair of blue jeans and one of my dad’s old flannel shirts. I must say that this is a much better look.
Sarah, you are as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside, and I am truly blown away by how amazing you look today.
Sarah has always been a bit of a tomboy. She was never one of those silly girls who spent her time chasing boys and dreaming of the day she could dress up as a princess and stroll down the aisle to meet her Prince Charming. She had better things to do. Once she met, Mark, however, it seems that her priorities changed a bit.
It wouldn’t be very sisterly of me to fail to point out that this celebration today would never have taken place without me. As I mentioned, Mark’s brother is my ex-boyfriend. One night we were going to a Red Sox game and had a couple of extra tickets. I invited my sister, and he invited his brother. They hit it off right away.
We could tell the two were a good match when they shouted the exact same insults every time a Yankee took to bat.
After the game that night, Sarah tried to play it cool with me, but every time she knew I was going to Mark’s house, she’d offer to tag along. I said she “tried” to play it cool. She wasn’t very good at it. Happily, Mark wasn’t worried about playing it cool and he began calling and courting her within a week of that first meeting.
Mark and Sarah, to say that I am happy for you both would be such an understatement. Every time I see you together, you are smiling or laughing. Just being around you two makes others happy. The joy you give each other is so obvious.
May this happiness you feel today continue for the rest of your lives. I love you both.
